In a humiliating fall for one of the financial world's leading figures, the chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), who on Saturday was staying in a $3,000-a-night suite in a Manhattan hotel, slumped Monday in a packed courtroom while a New York City judge ordered him held without bail on sexual assault charges.

The 62-year-old Socialist, who served as French finance minister in the late 1990s, left for Washington in late 2007 to head the International Monetary Fund, just as the global economy was hit by the worst downturn since World War Two.

The polls have consistently shown Strauss-Kahn, who has yet to officially declare his candidacy, trouncing Sarkozy and leading all other potential challengers in the presidential election next April and May.

That was until the shock news of his arrest in New York over an alleged sexual assault on a hotel maid. Prosecutors charged him on Sunday with a criminal sexual act, attempted rape and unlawful imprisonment. Strauss-Kahn's lawyer said he would plead not guilty.

"Strauss-Kahn has almost no incentive to stay in this country and every incentive to leave," McConnell said. "If he went to France, we would have no legal mechanism to guarantee his return to this country."

Defense lawyers tried to have Strauss-Kahn released on $1 million bail but prosecutors convinced the judge he might flee to France and she ordered him held behind bars. With his bail request rejected, Strauss-Kahn was to be dispatched to New York's notorious Rikers Island jail. Strauss-Kahn faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.

His accuser, a 32-year-old maid, said he attacked her when she went to clean his $3,000 a day suite in the Sofitel hotel near Times Square. Prosecutors said Strauss-Kahn came out of the bathroom and shut the door of his suite to prevent the maid from leaving.
"He sexually assaulted her and attempted to forcibly rape her. When he was unsuccessful, he forced her to perform oral sex on him," Assistant District Attorney John McConnell told the court.

Brafman said in court that forensic evidence taken by police from Strauss-Kahn "will not be consistent with a forcible encounter. We believe this a very, very defensible case and he should be entitled to bail."
"I think it's important that you all understand that this battle has just begun," Brafman told reporters.

The judge set May 20 as the date for the next hearing.

French Reaction

Latest opinion polls had put Strauss-Kahn as clear favorite to win if he were to stand in France’s 2012 presidential election. Other likely contenders from the opposition Socialist Party to unseat the ruling conservative UMP party include party leader Martine Aubry and left-wing veteran Francois Hollande.

Here are some important people in France who gave their own oppinion about Strauss-Kahn's sexual assault case :
